OPENAI ROADMAP TASTES OF STRAWBERRY AND LEAKS
A very mixed week for OpenAI this week from health coaches to $5 million cars, bioscience, board moves and…strawberries? The big news came from an all-hands staff meeting leak that OpenAI had created five levels to track its progress toward AGI; the path to ‘human-level’ problem-solving. We’re only on Level 2…
OpenAI has reportedly introduced a new five-tier system to track its progress toward artificial general intelligence (AGI). The classification system ranges from Level 1 (current conversational AI) to Level 5 (AI capable of running entire organisations). Today’s chatbots, like ChatGPT, are at Level 1, to achieve level 5 of capability it needs to have all the abilities and skills of the previous stages plus broad intelligence.

To run an organisation it would need to be able to understand all the independent parts and how they work together. OpenAI believes its technology is currently at Level 1 but nearing Level 2, dubbed ‘Reasoners.’ The company reportedly demonstrated a GPT-4 research project showing human-like reasoning skills at the meeting, hinting at progress towards Level 2. Level 2 AI can perform basic problem-solving tasks on par with a PhD-level human without tools, with Level 3 rising to agents that can take action for users - something that has eluded AI models to date…but perhaps not for much longer.
24 hours later, a further leak described a new model generation project code-named ‘Strawberry’ which would enable OpenAI products to “…not just generate answers to queries but to plan ahead enough to navigate the internet autonomously and reliably to perform what OpenAI terms “deep research,” according to the source that Reuters went on the record with. An agentic AI approach on steroids of sorts. As we have said before, once the tech can make decisions based on criteria and access users give it, we’ll see a very different world start to form.
