OPENAI RESPONDS TO MEGA GOOGLE (A)I/O
OpenAI announced Plugins are moving from Alpha to Beta testing to all (who pay) less than two months after Plugins were first announced. A direct response to Google’s I/O? Almost certainly. Google’s multiple announcements were extremely well received by the tech press (even if they reveal what they used to train the new model, PaLM2). Boring and safe would be a good way to categorise the 2-hour keynote.

ChatGPT Plus users will now be able to access the plugins that OpenAI announced previously. Microsoft also axed its waitlist for GPT-4-enabled Bing.
Even if OpenAI waited a couple of weeks, the announcement (a Tweet by Sam Altman) wouldn’t have looked so ‘we’re still/here too’ after Google announced Bard, Google’s ChatGPT competitor, is free, available in +180 countries, works with their main products already and is working with the following companies:
Google positioned itself superbly as the adult/regular person AI brand (with a dose of high nerd), taking several swipes at OpenAI without mentioning them once. Overall, the tech press and influential folks got a huge dose of ‘AI needs discipline and thinking about bad outcomes before you launch it’ with a bombastic dollop of side-eye to OpenAI.
