APPLE LAUNCHES OPENA-iOS
Another massive week for OpenAI. A hiring spree including a retired U.S. Army (General Paul M. Nakasone), bumper earnings (now a whopping $3.4 billion), a possible change of corporate direction, and a *tiny* (weird) deal with Apple that might just change how billions use AI in the next decade.
Firstly, read the WDODTW everything Apple announced wrap up. OpenAI’s role in ‘Apple Intelligence’ isn’t all encompassing, but the deal is a smart one, even if Gemini and co will eventually come on board as an option:
Two tiers of AI will be available to newer iPhones (15), Macs (M1 + chips) and iPads: the company’s own AI and that of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
ChatGPT will step in for tasks that Siri or Apple’s apps can’t handle and ask permission before sharing requests with OpenAI - the ONLY OpenAI element and an opt-in as a top layer above the system integration.
OpenAI will integrate GPT-4o, not GPT-4 into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS.
The bulk of all AI compute is done on-device.
Apple AI features won’t be available until September or later.
Apple will ‘pay’ OpenAI for ChatGPT through distribution, not cash.
Apple says there will be other choices beyond ChatGPT in future.
Sam Altman said, “We’re excited to partner with Apple to bring ChatGPT to their users in a new way,” … “Apple shares our commitment to safety and innovation, and this partnership aligns with OpenAI’s mission to make advanced AI accessible to everyone.”
The partnership marks another aggressive move by OpenAI to dominate the consumer AI space. With few obstacles in its path, OpenAI is now focusing on a richer user base. If there were ever a reason to stay close to what OpenAI does next, it’s now. A lot of questions still remain…
